Former Convent of San Francesco di Assisi in Syracuse

The extraordinary complex of the former convent of San Francesco d’Assisi in Ortigia (Syracuse) returns to public use after a long restoration.

Various disastrous seismic events affect the province and destroy the rich historical - artistic - religious heritage of the city in different periods:

Syracuse earthquake of 1125 documents the collapse of the nave of the metropolitan cathedral of the Nativity of Maria Santissima.
Catania earthquake of 1169 or violent Sant'Agata earthquake with consequent tsunami.
Earthquake in the Val di Noto, Anno Domini 1542 or Magnus Terremotus in terra Xiclis destructive with consequent tsunami.
Earthquake in the Val di Noto of 1693 catastrophic with consequent tsunami.
Few, but very ancient, the places of worship that have gone through almost unscathed the neglect of time and the cataclysms of nature like this religious complex.

Now great international artists will be on display in the prestigious premises of the former convent of San Francesco d’Assisi in Syracuse, which has been renovated and has lost new life.

Chiesa San Francesco

Thanks to its artistic and cultural heritage, the city of Syracuse has been awarded the title of World Heritage Site since 2005.

Due to the distinguished Norman, Renaissance and Baroque architectural profile there are numerous places of worship that are part of the heritage protected by Unesco.
